Thank you for covering Baghdad with 24-7 prayer this Ramadan! We’re excited to see God’s Kingdom grow in this city.
Kadthimiya is considered a holy city by Shia muslims and the city of Baghdad grew around it. Its name comes from the meaning: “Two who swallow their anger,” and is named after one of the 12 imams in Shia Islam, Musa Il-Kadhim and his grandson. The land was set aside by an Abbasid caliph as a graveyard reserved for members of the Quraysh which is a grouping of Arab clans, into one of which Muhammad was born. The location of the city has lent it to numerous plunders that have resulted in damage to its shrines at different times in history. To this day, Kadhimiya is a place of scholarship and a holy site of pilgrimage for Shia Muslims and remains one of the holiest sites in Islam. Each year, millions of pilgrims walk for sometimes hundreds of kilometers from all around the country to come to this mosque for a pilgrimage and to the imam. Kadthmiya is most famous for its ornate mosque and pilgrimage site as well as the place where Iraqi officials executed a significant leader.
Pray for: Pray against a spirit of confusion and for clarity that the people of Baghdad would see God for Who is truly is and that He alone is the Holy One and worthy of worship.
