Jihad & Shurta
Al-Jihad neighborhood was historically another mixed Sunni and Shia middle class neighborhood before the insurgence of sunni extremists after the US invasion. It is now mostly run by Shiite Mahdi army which was created by Shia cleric Al-Sadr as opposition to the US army in 2003.
Shurta is home to an athletic sports club and is named after the common Arabic word for “police.”
